American singer, pianist and composer Roberta Flack died on Monday, February 24 at the age of 88. A press release, cited by the professional magazine Variety, does not indicate the place or causes of death, but states that the singer died “peacefully surrounded by her family.”
Born on February 10, 1937 in Black Mountain (North Carolina), Roberta Cleopatra Flack will be raised in a musical atmosphere, her father, who works for an administration dedicated to veterans, plays the piano, her mother is organist in several churches of Arlington (Virginia) where the family settled. Roberta Flack learns to play the piano from an early age, accompanies choral formations, sings on occasion. At the age of 15, she received a scholarship to study classical music and singing at Howard University in Washington DC, where she also conducted the institution’s choir. Graduated, she started teaching music at the age of 19.
